[Help] Imperial Guard TIE Interceptor with a standard color (instead of red)
#1
Greetings! I am a player of SWG Legends and SWGEmu, and I have joined this forums because I am interested in particular modds of our beloved game. Smile

For starters, I do like to request at least one thing since I have no experience in modding at all. I have a character in SWG Legends, who happens to be an Imperial pilot, that owns an Imperial Guard TIE Interceptor, and I wish to have it with a standard-color (while still having winglest) just like the rest of the TIEs, instead of red.

There is this video that, if you look closely while you pause at the right moment in 4:14 and between 4:53-4:54 , you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Sadly, that mod was probably long gone -- hence the reason why I'm requesting.

Normally, Imperial ships' color cannot be changed with the Ship Paint Kits (unlike the Alliance ships and Freelance ships). Perhaps, one day, I might learn some basic modding, such as changing Imperial ships colors, just for the fun experiences, and maybe even share with others. But for now I like to request what I asked, if possible.

I will greatly appreciate in whatever you can do to help me on this.

I hate to make this post, as you seem like a nice person, but we don't allow/support illegal servers on ModTheGalaxy unfortunately, Legends being one.

I don't understand Confused ! What do you mean Legends is one of the illegal servers? As far as I know, when I sign up for Legends, I carefully read their terms of service, as well as their rules and policies before accepting. They clearly show that they take legal cases very seriously. They don't even allow players to play their server without legal copies, or having more than one accounts in the same house-hold, much like SWGEmu does.

Besides, I have plenty of old in-game friends that I know since we played together live in Starsider until the shut down. The community is wonderful as well. I can't just abandon them like that! Sad

Legends is not even complete yet, like Emu. So, as far as I know, I don't think that they are using any code directly from SOE. SOE probably even lost it as soon as the shut down, so, by the time, I don't think that would be possible. Legends started since almost 1 year ago (which is new of course), and by that time, it was about 4 years since the shut down.

Is there any evidences to suggest that Legends is illegal?

As heckyl pointed out, Legends is using illegally obtained source code from SOE, which makes it illegal to run and operate (Also a big red flag dangerous to the SWG emulation scene (Even though Legends isn't emulation), due to the possibility of legal repercussions from Disney/EA/LF).

They definitely are using such code (I know the people that created it and it's basically an open secret if you dig around), any NGE server besides PSWG is running that code, the only reason they're not complete is because they're run by people that don't really know how to get it to run properly.

As I come from a law-biding family, I respectfully understand the modthegalaxy policy. I suppose I'm not the only one who at first doesn't realize what got himself/herself into, suggesting what heckyl said.

Timbab, I strongly wish to continue this conversation a bit more as it's starting to makes sense. I'm curious of how they got the code in the first place. If they didn't obtained source code after the shutdown, then could it mean they got it before the shutdown? Maybe perhaps when it was announced in the summer of 2011 which probably spark people trying to save whatever they can before it was gone for good?

You also said that "it's basically an open secret if you dig around". After carefully navigating in SWGL website, either I found nothing or I don't understand. However, I did found this, which is from a thread in SWGP forum. This is one of the evidence that I wanted to see.

It turns out I'm starting to see the light, to see that you guys are telling the truth.

From what I read there was a hack years back it the hacker released the source code. I'm at work now or I'd google and post some links.

It's been a while now and I haven't kept up with it, so the story might have changed with more evidence, but basically, from what I know, it stems from an SOE employee that was in contact with a person belonging to a group involving multiple emulation scene members (Not from SWGEmu, but other projects). Forgot when exactly they obtained it, but afaik it was around 2013 or 2014.

These people then went dark in the scene and worked on a faux 'NGE emulation' project that used the code as its base for about a year, until they were exposed by a handful of people (I was one of them), which led to them kind of vanishing again and at a later point anonymously dumping it publically on Reddit in early 2015? if I remember right. They were a tad careless and left some traces of who they were, too, but I won't go into that.

Reborn and then Legends (And others, basically any NGE server not PSWG) were a direct result of a couple of people that got a hold of this code, which was hacked together by amateurs to get it to run, mostly for attention, 'recognition', eFame and potential profit.

Also worth pointing out that it wasn't the final code, but stems from a bit earlier, patch 54? 55? I forgot now, it's been almost two years.

In terms of sources, one can probably still find some threads on Reddit (/r/swg (Which supports these servers) and /r/swgemu).

P.S. It's not illegal for players to play on these servers, but due to the nature of them, they themselves are illegal and can be shut down at any moment. These servers, though it's a bit too late now, also put legitimate projects like SWGEmu in danger, due to a potential blanket purge by Disney/EA/LF, etc, this is the core reason why we won't support these servers on ModTheGalaxy, even though we're technically independent.

The patch from the leaked code was Chapter 16.4 (Nym's themepark revamp).

http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Updates for quick reference.

(I'm aware of it because one of the teams working with the leaked code tried to recruit me. Why, I have no idea.)
